Evening

Lookout Records

2004

The debut album of this San Fransico-based band is a stunning exploration of sound. A most aptly named band, their music occupies that half-light world between waking and consciousness, a dreamy, trippy kind of place. They are a badly lit subway in a spooky neighbourhood. A motorway service station at 3am, neon lights blinking.

Opening tracks "Being is Automatic" and "Placing You Center" really highlight the bands modern pop approach. Curious sounds ripple away in the background, in the darkness, while Matt Rist's emotive vocal connects through a multilayered guitar, synth and bass sound wall.

One of the greatest moments is certainly the powerful "Vivixc", constructed around a dynamic, driving drum beat, and piano, guitars wail from both sides, echoing and reverberating.

The technical production of this album is spot on. A complex mixture of sounds and ideas, it would be very easy to sounded clouded or muddy, but everything on this album is clear and crisp.

Evening deserve your attention. Embrace the shadows.
