The Grimm Robe Demos

Sunn0)))

Southern Lord

2005

You’ve got the hangover to end all hangovers. Your alarm clock doesn't go off (or even worse, it *does* go off). Your shower’s broken so it's either stone cold or scalding hot. It's pissing down with rain. Your girlfriend has just dumped you. And you’ve got to go to work in a shit job that you loathe with all your soul!

The GrimmRobe Demos is the soundtrack to that day.

I’m not saying it’s shit! But it is grim. It’s more than grim. It’s Grimm!

The lower end of the sound spectrum definitely prevails, as anyone who has seen (and felt!) the band play live can attest. Cal from Discharge once sang about “the sound of an enormous door, slamming in the depths of Hell”. The GrimmRobe Demos is the sound of that very same door’s filthy, seized up, un-oiled, rusty hinges, grinding in the moments leading up to the end of the world.

Messrs O’Malley and Anderson have since given sunno))) a more varied, experimental sound, still as heavy as fuck, and if you like the later releases you’d definitely do well to check this out.

This CD is the one constant in my daily selection of discs to take to work. It’s also the CD that I’ve listened to most this year. I don’t know if that’s because my life is pretty Grimm, or if it’s because it’s a bloody good CD! Probably a bit of both.
