Theory of Ruin
Escape Artist
2003
This short, five track EP sees Theory of Ruin finally dump any comparison (and probably baggage) relating to Fudge Tunnel, moving in a far more punk orientated direction, building up rhythms and structures, only to pull them down again in chaotic frenzies.
Here there is the dark, ironic humor that we all know and love; there is plenty of low end groove and frenetic drumming. Alex shouts and snarls through all five tracks like a man giving vent to every frustration in his body and mind, battering the angular riffs out of his guitar as though it were the target of his anger.
It sounds like a band finally find a sound of their own, getting comfortable and experimenting, pushing the boundaries of their own styles and blending new ideas together. As a result, it maybe doesn’t feel as complete as “Counter-Culture Nosebleed”, but it works because it is honest and reflects a band trying to create something new amongst an ocean of throwbacks.
