Self Titled
Solea
Bad News Records
2004
California's Solea are a powerful band who should really be much bigger than they are. Their self titled release showcases their amazing talent for intelligent, emotional rock songs, that sit somewhere between punk rock and pop. They reminded me a little of Irish band Wilt (ex-Kerbdog people), and while their is some similarity, Solea are altogether much easier to listen to, owing in a big part to Garrett Klahn's vocals.
'Apotheke' opens, and you are immediately thrown into this band's rich and colourful world. Some call this 'driving music' which is a backward compliment I guess. The dynamic, elegantly simple guitar and bass work, build patterns around which Klahn's voice soars, taking you up to high emotional peaks.
There is nothing dark or depressing about this album, which is sometimes the implication when you say 'emo'. They are instead life-affirming and positive, a bright star in the sky, burning which a strength few have.
The album produces great track after great track, not one of them lets you down. The acousitc 'Even Stranger Days' begins the come down, after the awesome journey they brought you on.
One of the finest bands in the current LA/San Francisco 'scene' (among others, Evening, Communique, etc), Solea should have a great future.
