LaFaro/Public Relations Exercise Split 7"

LaFaro have a lot of energy. They are kind of reminiscent of some of the DC hardcore bands, only a bit noisier, rougher around the edges. They don't have the articulation of say Fugazi, but they have a lot of balls. Maybe a closer comparison would be the Chicago scene, Sweep the Leg Johnny spring to mind, minus the sax. "Scott" they're contribution to the split is a fine, pounding piece of noisy punk rock. It has that DC dynamism of pulling things back then letting it all go and slamming the sound right at the back of the head with a brick when you aren't looking.
"Subteniente" by Public Relations Exercise took me a while to get into. I'm still not sure if I like it or not. There is something of early At the Drive-In to their style, but not really. I admire their strength and attitude, and they're are certainly tight as fuck as a band, with complicated rhythms and guitar lines breaking back and forth, the song moving in odd mannerisms, as the vocalist contorts his singing style from all out screaming to calm. As I listen to it now, I can feel it growing on me. You definitely have to give it a few spins, and it's the shortest song on all of these split 7"s. Don't judge it straight off. You'll be rewarded with a challenging band.
