You're A Woman, I'm A Machine
Death From Above 1979
Last Gang/679
2005
There seems to be a whole plethora of bands around at the moment that are stripping back the standard band format and reducing it to the bare minimum. Death From Above 1979 have torn back the fat and have left only the drums and bass, with vocals being handled by the drummer.
Comparisons are instantly made the Lightning Bolt, but DFA1979, with the obvious addition of a singer, have a less noise orientated approach, opting for more conventional song structures.
And immense they are too. Big, distored bass riffs cut through everything, benefiting from an interesting mix that pushes the bass left and right along with the vocals, creating a huge stereo effect, with no 'empty space' that would make you wish for a guitar.
The CD breathes black smoke, churning hellish amounts of unhealthy noise pollution into your ears. Music this good surely must be against doctors advice and should carry a health warning. Without one you may find yourself breaking out in insane moments of gibbering wildly at your fellow humans, barking like a dog, or just losing control of all your bodily functions as the drum and bass driven rhythms make your nerves twitch spasmodically.
Hell yeah, check this out. Death From Above? You bet, mofo!
