I wasn't too sure what to expect of this. The involvement of ex-Deerhoof member Rob Fiske promised lots, but there's always that doubt....
However, nothing to fear. This is a welcome breath of experimental, noise craziness. Like early Sonic Youth if they had stayed with that early sound. All screeching vocals, wailing guitars, exploding drums. Occasionally there is half the band going into a frenzy of chaotic noise butchery, but a mellow guitar line draws a line through the maelstrom.
My personal favourite track, 10,000 Dead, rhythmic and torn, cutting guitar and heavy low end rumble...a soup of glorious fractured sound, pulled together my the straining vocal.
Moments of madness, moments of clarity, weaving in and out through this soundscape of fumbling chaos. It's all about bizarre juxtapositions, pulled together and given coherence by a real talent for what they do.
As ever with everything from Free Porcupine, the handmade CD jacket and booklet are as beautiful as always. Funny, poignent and bang on target.
Forget the crap you normally by down the High Street, go buy this.
