Break Even

2003

This noise rock trio from the NYC/New Jersey area, walk an interesting line somewhere between the angular, jazzy rock of the Jesus Lizard, and the all out distorted noise of Unsane. It's a terrific racket.

This, their 2003 release for Break Even Records, opens with "Start Fires", which calls to mind Big Black's "Kerosene", not musically, but in terms of ideas. Thrashing along on frantic drumming and a big fat bass line, the screeching guitar is like hacksaw through bone. "Bedroom Eyes" has that disturbing, Unsane-like sound, of a maniac stalking the house, a glint in his eye that you don't like the look of. Not one bit. "Bound and Gagged" has that definite Jesus Lizard groove, of creeping bassline and stabbing guitar, inching forwards as the vocals, buried in distortion and fuzz, rant and rave.

In fact, I keep thinking of psychitic hillbillies when I listen to this album...for no apparent reason it would appear. Maybe the music is just that infectious.

There is plenty here to keep the avid noise rock fan impressed. It's loud and nasty, and very noisy. And we like that around here.
